New Delhi: Arsenal lost ground in the Premier League title race after dropping crucial points at Brentford on Thursday as Keane Lewis-Potter earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Manchester City’s emphatic 3-0 win against Fulham on Wednesday cut down the Gunners’ lead at the top of the table to three points and put the pressure back on the Londoners to restore the six-point advantage. However, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to respond with a similar result.

Bees frustrate Gunners as title race heats up

The Bees were the better of the two sides in the first half but failed to capitalise on a shaky start from the Gunners. Goalkeeper David Raya rescued the visitors with a sharp save from Igor Thiago.

Arsenal did what every good side does and took the lead against the run of play as Noni Madueke rose above Rico Henry and nodded Piero Hincapie’s ball back across the goal and into the net in the 61st minute.

However, Brentford responded almost immediately and levelled within 10 minutes of Madueke’s goal. The Gunners were undone by a set-piece routine when Michael Kayode’s long throw was flicked to the back post, where Lewis-Potter dived in to score a bullet header into the top corner.

For the neutrals, the draw seemed like a fair result. After dropping two points, Arsenal reached 57 points from 26 games, four ahead of Man City. With a recent history of late-season collapses, the Gunners would eye a swift recovery to get back to winning ways, especially with City breathing down their neck.

Meanwhile, Brentford are seventh on 40 points, four behind fifth-placed Chelsea and five behind fourth-place Manchester United. Keith Andrews’ side is well on course to qualify for European football for the first time.
