Sanjay Kapur estate case: Delhi’s high society drama has now spilled into the courtroom. In a fresh twist to the ongoing Kapur family dispute, Priya Sachdev has filed a Rs 20 crore civil defamation suit against her sister-in-law, Mandhira Kapur Smith. The widow of late business tycoon Sanjay Kapur is alleging that remarks made in a podcast have caused her severe reputational damage and public humiliation.
Priya approached the Delhi High Court on Thursday seeking Rs 20 crore in damages. The suit also names podcast host Pooja Chaudhri as a defendant. According to the plea, statements made about Priya through podcasts, interviews, social media posts and widely republished online content have “seriously harmed” her reputation and caused emotional distress.
She has requested the court to restrain Mandhira and the podcaster from publishing or circulating any further allegedly defamatory material. Additionally, she has sought directions to remove existing content from digital platforms and social media.
The dispute escalated after Mandhira appeared on the podcast InControversial with Pooja Chaudhri, where she allegedly made remarks critical of Priya. The suit claims that the content was shared extensively across platforms, amplifying what Priya describes as a campaign that led to “loss of reputation, mental agony and social humiliation.”
This legal move comes amid an already complex inheritance battle. Sunjay Kapur passed away in London in June 2025. In August, actor Karisma Kapoor, who was married to Sunjay from 2003 to 2016, filed a suit on behalf of her children, Kiaan Raj and Samara. The petition alleges that the will submitted by Priya is fabricated and designed to exclude the children from their inheritance.
Priya married Sunjay in 2017 and shares a son with him, and has denied any wrongdoing. Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, is also involved as a plaintiff in the parallel legal proceedings.
Beyond the civil case, Priya has reportedly filed a criminal defamation complaint against Mandhira and another individual. The battle, therefore, is unfolding on multiple legal fronts.
