In today’s digital age, fraud methods are evolving rapidly, and this has created new challenges for people. By now you must have heard about methods like fake links, OTP fraud, or KYC update. But, cyber criminals have resorted to a more complex and dangerous scam. In this scam neither money is asked from you nor any link is sent; Instead, money is sent to your account first, allowing the fraudsters to empty your account.
The fraudsters first send a small amount to the victim’s bank account. As soon as this transaction happens, they get a call or message saying that the money has been credited to their account. This message is like an official alert of the bank, which does not raise any doubt. Then, the person calling introduces himself as a bank employee or the sender of the money by mistake and requests that you check the balance or help in returning the money.
Here people often make big mistakes. When they enter the PIN into their mobile banking or UPI app while on a call, they are actually approving a payment request. This moment allows the fraudster to withdraw money from your account. Within seconds the victim’s account becomes empty and they do not understand how all this happened.
The most worrying thing about this fraud is that there is no element of greed in it, rather it targets honesty. People think that it is right to return the money which came by mistake. They quickly gain confidence after seeing the message “Money has been credited”. Most people are unaware that UPI PIN is never required to receive money.
If suddenly money comes into your account, there is no need to panic. Do not trust unknown calls or enter the PIN as directed. No employee associated with the bank or UPI will ask for PIN over the phone. The right way is to contact your bank’s official helpline or branch directly.
If you enter the PIN by mistake and the money is withdrawn, don’t waste a minute. Immediately inform your bank and call 1930 cyber crime helpline. Apart from this, it is also necessary to lodge a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner you complain, the better your chances of getting your money back.
