Mo Salah mourns death of grandfather after Liverpool loss to Man City

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is mourning a deeply personal loss this week following the death of his grandfather, Ahmed Abdel Aziz Al-Bambi.

The news reached the Egyptian forward shortly after Liverpool’s agonising 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

The heartbreak was confirmed by Salah’s sister, Rabab, who shared the news on social media. In an emotional tribute, she wrote:

“To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. My esteemed and beloved grandfather has passed away. May Allah grant him mercy, forgive him, and shelter him in His Kingdom.”

Salah’s uncle and the chairman of the Mohamed Salah Youth Centre, Abdel Aziz Al-Bambi, also called on the public to “pray for mercy and forgiveness” for the late family patriarch.

The funeral is set to take place in Nagrig, Salah’s hometown in Egypt.

The tragedy follows a difficult weekend on the pitch, where Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration over a missed penalty call involving Salah.

Discussing a controversial moment where Salah was denied a one-on-one chance, Slot remarked: “Anyone who has been to this stadium in the last seven or eight years, that is a goal for Salah. Once again, the referee decides not in our favour.”

It remains unclear if Salah will travel to Egypt, potentially missing Wednesday’s clash with Sunderland.
