Anyone who has ever been to Benidorm knows that it's the British food capital of Continental Europe.

Walk down the strip, and you'll find more Full Englishes and roast dinners than you could possibly eat through in a week's holiday. The good potato and gravy-based form is continued at Alicante Airport, where the first Wetherspoons outside of the UK and Ireland opened on Monday morning.

I was there to witness the first customers come through the door and the first paying customer, Daz Sunderland, enjoy a pint of lager. Named Castell de Santa Bàrbera after a nearby mountain fort, the pub has a few nods towards its Spanish hosts, such as a menu printed in both Spanish and English, a 'Spanish tortilla' dish, and staff that flit easily between the two languages.

But, overall, it is overwhelmingly a British outfit. The bulk of the menu is classic British grub, served up alongside pints of Stella and tins of Old Speckled Hen. Here's a selection (in euros) of what you can get.

There are five beers on tap. As Spoons is a little smaller than the ones you'd normally find on the UK high street, it is limited to how many taps it can have. That means no ale, only lager. Which makes sense, given how warm it typically is in Alicante. The draft options are:

When it comes to drinks, there is one glaring omission. The bar won't give punters free glasses of water; instead, staff instruct them to order bottles.
