New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the decision of the Madras High Court in the Karthigai Deepam dispute on Thirupparankundram hill in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court said that Muslims cannot offer namaz every day in Nellithoppu area of Thirupparankundram hills. The Supreme Court said that Muslims can offer namaz on Thirupparankundram hill only on Ramzan and Bakrid. This decision of the Supreme Court has also shocked the DMK government of Tamil Nadu. The DMK government had banned the burning of Karthigai Deepam on Thirupparankundram hill in the name of law and order.

Earlier, Madras High Court had given orders to burn Karthigai Deepam, but the DMK government of Tamil Nadu had refused to implement its order. Hindu organizations had sought permission to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam near the Subrahmanya Swamy temple located on the Thirupparankundram hill. There is a Dargah near this place. Due to which controversy arose. Then the matter went to Madras High Court. In December 2025, the Madras High Court had given permission to burn the Karthigai Deepam. When the DMK government of Tamil Nadu pointed out the difficulty in implementing it, the Madras High Court had also expressed displeasure over it.

Justice GR Swaminathan of Madras High Court had ordered the lighting of Karthigai Deepam. Opposition parties have filed an impeachment motion against him.

The Karthigai Deepam case had also started a political controversy. When more than 100 opposition MPs presented a motion of impeachment in Parliament against Justice GR Swaminathan of Madras High Court who ordered its burning. Justice Swaminathan had rejected all the objections of the Tamil Nadu government. While giving the verdict, he had said that lighting Karthigai Deepam on Deepthoon does not affect the Dargah or the rights of Muslims. Justice Swaminathan had said that if the lamp is not lit, then the rights of the temple are definitely in danger. Justice of Madras High Court had said that the trustees of the mosque are disturbing the status quo. The temple management should remain vigilant against any attempts to encroach on its property.
