People were left absolutely baffled when asked what Wi-Fi actually stands for. DreamHack, known for bringing the gaming world together through its annual festivals, shared the funny clip of one of their presenters asking people what Wi-Fi stands for on TikTok.

Answers ranged from "wireless fibre" to "wireless internet" and featured many "ums". Despite many attempts to answer the question, nobody seemed to come up with the correct answer. In fact, a few people didn't even bother trying to give a guess, with some giving up halfway or simply responding "I don't know".

The 22-second video gained an impressive 641,000 views and more than 300 comments, many of which featured people sharing their confusion about what Wi-Fi stands for and their own guesses.

Many wrote that it stands for "wireless fidelity", but one major argument that kept being made in the comments was that, actually, it doesn't stand for anything.

One person wrote: "Contrary to popular belief, it does not officially stand for anything. It was developed as a catchy marketing term to make the technology more consumer-friendly. The term was chosen because it rhymed with "Hi-Fi" (High Fidelity)."

A second commented: "Wi-Fi is not an acronym. It does not mean "Wireless Fidelity". It's just a brand name for IEEE 802.11 wireless technology."

A third, echoing the above, said: "Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. It's a marketing term coined to make the technology sound more appealing and easier to remember, similar to 'Hi-Fi' (High Fidelity) in audio systems."

Wi-Fi is not an acronym-it's a name created by the Wi-Fi Alliance as a simple, memorable brand for devices that follow the IEEE 802.11 wireless standards, which define how Wi-Fi works. The Wi-Fi Alliance has trademarked both the name and logo, and only devices that successfully pass their tests can be labelled 'Wi-Fi Certified'.

While the comments were split between it standing for Wireless Fidelity and not standing for anything, there was one answer someone shared that many of us would agree with, and that was "don't care, as long as it works".
