A film hailed as a "classic and solid 90s action film," featuring one of Hollywood's biggest A-list stars from that decade, is set to grace television screens this evening. The action-packed thriller starring Steven Seagal is widely regarded as the actor's finest work to date, garnering widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences for his commanding performance.
Frequently compared to "Die Hard on a ship", the film is sure to keep viewers gripped right through to its thrilling conclusion. Helmed by director Andrew Davis from a screenplay penned by JF Lawton, this pulse-pounding action flick stars Seagal in the leading role - who also produced the film - alongside a captivating Tommy Lee Jones as the antagonist, with Gary Busey, Erika Eleniak, Patrick O'Neal, and Colm Meaney rounding out the supporting cast.
The official synopsis of the 1992 action thriller states: "A heroic loner takes on a group of nuclear terrorists in this seagoing tale.
"Posing as a rock band, the terrorists get themselves hired for a party aboard the USS Missouri, a battleship en route to Pearl Harbor for decommissioning.
"They plan to steal the ship's nuclear arsenal but haven't reckoned on the intervention of the ship's chef, a decorated former Navy SEAL."
Under Siege airs on ITV4 tonight, February 8, at 9pm.
The film proved to be both a box office hit and a critical darling upon its release, raking in over $156.6 million globally against an estimated production budget of around $30 million, reports the Express.
It also secured two Academy Award nominations - the only film in Seagal's career to receive Oscar recognition - for Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Sound.
Hailed as Seagal's "finest and best film to date" by audiences and reviewers, Under Siege spawned a 1995 sequel, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, which failed to make a significant impact when it arrived in cinemas.
It also marked the final screen appearance for actor Patrick O'Neal before his passing in 1994.
Boasting an 83% critics' approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Under Siege garnered largely favourable reviews, with one enthusiast writing: "Great movie full of action from the start, good story, keeps me watching. Good movie for its time. 10/10".
Another satisfied viewer commented: "What an all-time absolute classic! If you've never seen this movie, you won't be disappointed, is that good!"
One fan of the actioner wrote: "Fun action movie that just happened to be the best Seagal movie. Tommy Lee Jones is great as the bad guy and everything just works."
Yet another impressed audience member said: "This is Seagal's best movie. It is a lot of fun to watch and I would recommend it to anyone who loves to watch action movies."
Critics have echoed similar sentiments, with one saying: "Die Hard on a ship, this Steven Seagal starrer is a hard-charged, perfectly detonated actioner that should especially delight especially macho mainstreamers."
Another reviewer commented: "The tension and humour level tail off a bit toward the conclusion, but Steven Seagal and Chicago director Andy Davis clearly declare themselves as top-flight talent."
A third critic said of the film: "A big step above Seagal's usual dreck thanks to skilful direction by Andrew Davis and strong villains played by Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey."
