A lesser-known Mediterranean island is becoming a go-to for British tourists as overtourism becomes a hot topic across Europe. Destinations like Tenerife and Barcelona, which historically get huge numbers of UK tourists, have seen protests taking place as locals become fed up with high visitor numbers. With this happening over the last few years, some tourists are looking for less crowded alternatives to visit, where they feel a bit more welcomed by locals.
EasyJet's 2026 Great British Holiday Audit was recently released, offering insights into where Brits will be travelling in the coming months, with some destinations proving more popular than in previous years. According to the data, flights of five to six hours are becoming the new norm, meaning Brits are more willing than ever to travel further for the right holiday, as budget airlines expand the destinations they fly to. EasyJet named several up-and-coming destinations that have seen more Brits in recent months.
Among these destinations is Djerba, a small island off the coast of Tunisia in North Africa. Several UK holiday providers, such as TUI and Love Holidays, provide all-inclusive holidays to this island, known for its stunning beaches and fun-filled resorts.
"Tunisia and its lesser-known island of Djerba continue to grow in popularity with the airline seeing a 12% increase in bookings to the country this year," EasyJet's 2026 release reads.
Djerba has several popular things to do for tourists. This includes Park Djerba Expore, which proves to be fun for visitors of all ages with its heritage and culture museums, along with its crocodiles.
Meanwhile, Djerbahood is a real open-air museum, which makes for a stellar walk to take in local artists' work. Meanwhile, tourists also enjoy the Ranch Yassmina Djerba La Douce, which welcomes visitors to trek along the beach on horseback, a truly unique experience that visitors have praised.
Other top-rated attractions on the island include Bazaar Homut Suk, a classic North African open-air market, as well as the Guella Museum, which charts the traditions and customs of Djerba.
Meanwhile, there are stand-out beaches dotted around the island. Popular examples include Sidi Mahrez, Plage de la Seguia and Aghir Beach, all of which have been praised for their bright sand and calm waters.
Djerba has gradually become a bucket list destination over the last few years. In fact, experts at Conde Nast Traveller named it as one of the best places to go back in 2025.
"This island of date palms and olive groves, which sits on the southern edge of the Mediterranean Sea and is said to be the real-life Land of the Lotus Eaters (where Odysseus's men consumed mythical fruits that vanquished all thoughts of home), is trading in more benign forms of culinary bewitchment these days," the publication says of the island.
EasyJet offers two weekly flights to Djerba from London Luton Airport. The flight time is around 3 and a half hours. This makes it a shorter journey than popular destinations like Tenerife and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.
There are also direct flights available from Manchester. The weather on Djerba is quite attractive, with highs of around 31C in the summer months of July and August.
In the quieter months of the year, such as April and November, you can still enjoy temperatures of around 22C and 23C. The weather tends to be dry in the summer months, but tourists could be met with occasional showers in the autumn months.
