The first day of this romance filled week is being celebrated as ‘Rose Day’ all over the world. On this day, lovers, friends and crushes express their feelings by gifting roses to each other. But do you know why rose was chosen to express love and what is the history of this day?

Why is Rose Day so special? (Significance of Rose Day)

The foundation of Valentine’s Week is laid from ‘Rose Day’. Rose has been considered the ‘language of emotions’ for centuries. Its biggest quality is that it says a lot without saying anything. From literature to cinema, roses have always been the greatest messengers of love.

Mystery of colors: What does which color rose mean?

On Rose Day, not only red roses, but you can express your feelings through different colors:

Red Rose: It is a universal symbol of deep love, passion and romance.

Yellow Rose: If you want to extend the hand of friendship to someone, then yellow rose is the best. It is a sign of happiness and new beginnings.

Pink Rose: It is given to express appreciation, kindness and gratitude.

White Rose: It is considered a symbol of purity, peace and true relationship.

Rose Day in the pages of history: Roots linked to Victorian era

There are many historical and literary reasons behind celebrating Rose Day on 7th February:

Victorian Tradition: According to history, in the Victorian era (19th century) people used to exchange flowers instead of expressing their feelings openly. At that time, ‘floriography’ (language of flowers) was quite popular, in which rose was given the highest place of affection and love.

Literary Associations: Rose is also mentioned in the famous play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by the great playwright William Shakespeare. Juliet says that changing the name does not diminish the fragrance of a rose, in the same way love is also not dependent on external identity.

Symbol of beginning: It was kept on 7th February, just a week before Valentine’s Day (14th February) so that love can begin with a soft and fragrant flower.
