Encounter – Delhi Police officers from the RK Puram area were involved in an armed encounter with two suspected criminals in the early hours of the morning, an incident that ended with both men being taken into custody. One of the suspects sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange of fire, while his associate was arrested without injury, police officials confirmed on Tuesday.

Police Act on Specific Intelligence Input

According to officials familiar with the operation, the police team had received precise information indicating that two known offenders were moving through the RK Puram locality with possible criminal intent. Acting on the tip-off, officers coordinated a targeted patrol and positioned themselves strategically to intercept the suspects before any offence could be carried out.

The police presence was increased in the area as part of the plan, with officers remaining alert for suspicious movement during the late-night hours.

Suspects Attempt to Escape During Interception

At around 3:30 am, a patrol unit noticed two individuals riding a motorcycle in a manner that raised suspicion. When the police attempted to stop them for questioning, the suspects allegedly tried to flee and opened fire on the officers in an apparent attempt to escape the scene.

Faced with an immediate threat, the police team responded in self-defence. Officers returned fire in a controlled manner to prevent further danger to themselves and nearby residents.

Brief Exchange of Fire Ends Quickly

The encounter was brief but intense, lasting only a few minutes. Preliminary accounts suggest that the suspects fired multiple rounds, while the police responded with limited gunfire aimed at neutralising the threat. During the exchange, one of the accused was struck in the leg, causing him to fall from the motorcycle.

Once the injured suspect was incapacitated, officers quickly moved in to secure both individuals. The second suspect was overpowered and arrested at the spot without resistance.

Accused Identified With Criminal History

Police later identified the two men as Sanjay and Sonu, both of whom are believed to have previous involvement in robbery and other criminal activities. The injured suspect is also known by the alias “Darinda” and is reportedly linked to several past cases registered in the city.

Authorities stated that the pair were likely searching for an opportunity to commit a robbery at the time they were intercepted. The motorcycle used by the suspects and a firearm were seized from the scene as part of the investigation.

Injured Suspect Shifted for Medical Treatment

Following the arrest, the injured accused was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Officials confirmed that his injury was not life-threatening and that he remains under police supervision while receiving treatment.

Both accused are expected to be formally questioned once medical clearance is obtained, and further legal proceedings will follow as per standard protocol.

Investigation Continues

Senior police officers have stated that a detailed investigation is underway to verify the suspects’ involvement in other criminal cases and to determine whether they were part of a larger network. Forensic examination of the seized weapon and ballistic analysis of the fired rounds are also being conducted.

Police have reiterated that the encounter occurred strictly in self-defence and emphasised their continued commitment to maintaining public safety through proactive night patrols and intelligence-based operations.
