
New Delhi, 5 February. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident in a coal mine in Meghalaya on Thursday and announced compensation for the families of the victims. The families of the 18 laborers who lost their lives in this accident will be provided financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each, while the injured will be given a compensation of Rs 50,000 each. This compensation will be given from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Compensation of Rs 2 lakh to each victim’s family
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a post on ‘X’, ‘Saddened by the accident in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. Express my condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured person. A compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be given to each victim’s family from PMNRF. Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured.
Ex-gratia amount of Rs 3 lakh to the families of the victims from Meghalaya government
The Sangma government of Meghalaya has also announced compensation. According to the Sangma government, an ex-gratia amount of Rs 3 lakh will be provided to the families of the victims.
It is noteworthy that there was a sudden explosion on Thursday morning in the illegal coal mine located in Thangsky area of East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya. However, the cause of the explosion is being ascertained and officials are investigating the matter. 18 workers have died in this accident while some others are feared trapped.
Amit Shah CM Talked to Sangma
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over phone and took stock of the situation following the explosion in a suspected illegal coal mine in a village in East Jaintia Hills district of Central and Meghalaya. During this, he also assured all possible help.
CM Sangma orders for comprehensive investigation of the incident
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed grief over the incident and announced an investigation into the matter. The Chief Minister said in a statement, ‘I am deeply saddened by this incident. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate tragedy. Sangma said the state government has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. He said that accountability would be fixed and strict legal action would be taken against the culprits.
