Political change in Manipur: Yumnam Khemchand Singh becomes Chief Minister

Desk: The political turmoil that has been going on for several months in Manipur has come to an end. Yumnam Khemchand Singh has been elected the new leader of the Manipur Assembly, and has been made the next Chief Minister of the state. Earlier, an important meeting of Manipur MLAs was held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, which was attended by party general secretaries Tarun Chugh and Sambit Patra. A total of 35 MLAs were present in this meeting, while two MLAs could not attend due to health reasons.

N Biren Singh’s resignation

Although the BJP has a majority in Manipur, the violent conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state had led to the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh. As a result the government in the state fell and President’s rule was imposed. Now, the situation seems to be normalising, and the BJP has again taken steps towards forming the government. Yumnam Khemchand Singh, 62 years old and MLA from Singjamei assembly constituency, is an engineer by profession. He has also been the Municipal Administration Minister in the previous Biren government.

President’s rule period

In Manipur, President’s rule was imposed for the first time on February 13, 2025 for six months due to ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. This period was extended by six months in August 2025. Manipur leaders who recently visited Delhi included former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Speaker of the adjourned Assembly Satyabrata Singh and Y Khemchand Singh. BJP state president A Sharda Devi was also present in the national capital.
