Nestled across Ireland are some charming towns that offer their own distinctive features and allure for an idyllic escape. One of which is home to 'Europe's smallest chapel' tucked between towering buildings and an award-winning pub that attracts visitors far and wide.

Carrick-on-Shannon, the largest county town in County Leitrim, Ireland, has undeniable charm despite its population of only around 4,500. The pretty riverside town, known as the inland boating capital of Ireland, is filled with cosy traditional pubs, a charming harbour, lush landscapes, and historic attractions that have garnered wide attention.

One of its most famous landmarks is the tiny Costello Chapel, measuring just 16 feet long and 12 feet wide. It's said to be the smallest in Europe and among the smallest in the world, with its entrance flanked by two stone pillars topped with Celtic crosses.

It certainly stands out in Carrick-on-Shannon, nestled between two buildings on the high street that tower over the Gothic chapel and its grand entrance door. Strikingly, the inside of the chapel is made of Bath stone, with no woodwork, and boasts a beautiful marble altar in front of a single stained-glass window.

Residents and visitors have long admired the unique chapel, with one sharing on TripAdvisor: "What a beautiful and sentimental little spot with a great story! The smallest church in the world? We loved this experience, just nestled between pubs in Carrick-on-Shannon!"

Another said: "It only takes a few minutes to view this smallest chapel in Ireland and 2nd smallest in the world, but it is worth the visit. It is both simple and beautiful, and makes you reflect on the devotion Costello felt for his wife."

"Small, tiny, but filled with an amazing sense of love. You can't help but be moved by a visit to this little chapel," a third wrote.

The petite chapel was built for Mary Josephine Costello after her husband, Edward Costello, wanted it as a burial place for his beloved wife after she died at the age of 47 in 1877. The Costello Chapel was finished in 1879, and her casket was placed in a sunken area to the left of the entrance, which can be seen today. After Edward died some years later, he was laid to rest on the right side of the chapel.

Situated next to Flynn's Bar, Costello Chapel is a standout along the high street, but with its unsuspecting location, it's easily missed. Just a short walk away is the award-winning pub and restaurant, The Oarsman, which is a favourite among locals.

The family-run pub is situated near the river, serving seasonal food that's locally sourced from sea and land, alongside its specially brewed lager. It's been featured in the Michelin Guide, named one of Ireland's best restaurants, and received a TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice Award in 2025.

Visitors have highly praised the pub as one shared on TripAdvisor: "Had a fantastic dinner; service, ambience, music, everything was absolutely perfect. The staff are super attentive and friendly, and we felt so well looked after. Every single dish we had was gorgeous and good value. We have been many times and cannot wait to go back."

A second commented: "WOW. The atmosphere was pleasant. Staff were very friendly, with great customer service. Great service. The food was amazing. Highly recommend." A third hailed it as having the "Best fish & chips I've ever eaten in my life."

While it's a small town with a thriving food scene, including at Buffalo Boy and The Red Bank Restaurant, its nightlife is another noteworthy feature. Thanks to its catalogue of bars, the town has a buzzing social life, with McHugh's Bar, Dunnes Bar, Murtagh's Bar, The Barrelstore and Gracie's Bar, all in easy reach of each other.

Elsewhere, visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the picturesque harbour in the town, cycle along the Shannon Blueway, visit the 19th-century Dock Arts Centre or take a trip to the nearby The Shed Distillery or beautiful Glencar Waterfall. There are plenty of water activities in the town, including a scenic cruise along the River Shannon, hiring a boat to go fishing or gliding along the water on a kayak - what better way to marvel at the town's unsuspecting beauty.
