Sanober Shaikh files case to stop ‘O’Romeo’ release

Sanober Shaikh, daughter of late Hussain Ustara, filed a case against O’Romeo Producer Sajid Nadadwala, Director Vishal Bhardwaj, and Author Hussain Zaidi. She Rased Objections to the film’s alleged connection to her father.

In her petition, Sanober urged the court to declare that the defendants had no right to deal with, release, or telecast O’Romeo under its current title or any other name on February 13, 2026, or any date after that.

The plea also requested a temporary injunction until the case was resolved, barring the defendants, their representatives, or anyone acting on their behalf from releasing or broadcasting the film on any platform.

Sanober asked the court to order a pre-screening of the film and appoint a court commissioner or another authorised individual to submit a report. The suit further sought interim reliefs, costs, and any other directions the court deemed fit.

The controversy began after the teaser of O’Romeo was released. Sanober alleged that no permission was taken from her family before making a film she claimed was inspired by her father’s life. Her lawyer issued a legal notice to Sajid Nadiadwala and Vishal Bhardwaj.

The makers denied that O’Romeo was based on Hussain Ustara. At the film’s trailer launch in Mumbai, Vishal Bhardwaj said the film was inspired by a chapter from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai and added that the necessary rights were acquired through the book.

Last month, Sanober Shaikh, denied that her family had threatened the team of Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming film Or Romeo. She said the family only wanted to view the movie before its release.

Earlier, reports claimed Sanober had sent a letter to producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Vishal Bhardwaj demanding ₹2 crore and a delay in the film’s release.

“The letter was addressed to producer Sajid Nadiadwala of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and director Vishal Bhardwaj last week. It claimed that O Romeo probably shows Hussain Ustara in a bad light, thereby affecting the family’s reputation. Hence, she reportedly asked for ₹2 crore. Along with the money, Sanober requested the makers to halt or cancel the film until her concerns were addressed,” according to a source who spoke to Bollywood Hungama.

O’Romeo stars Shahid Kapoor, Triptii Dimri and a large ensemble cast, and is scheduled to release on February 13.
