Jetting off abroad is always a thrilling prospect but, according to Laurie, the wife of a pilot and a seasoned traveller herself, there are certain fashion rules you should adhere to when flying. Known for her insightful travel tips on her YouTube channel Travel Tips by Laurie, she recently shared some crucial advice about what not to wear on a plane.

While it's tempting to step off the plane looking super stylish, Laurie insists that practicality should take precedence over style when choosing your in-flight outfit. She implores travellers to heed her advice, which she divulged in a recent video.

This isn't the onlytravel tipmaking the rounds lately. Just days ago, Ryanair also recently posted some vital information regarding hand luggage regulations.

In her online video, Laurie begins by outlining the types of clothing to avoid while flying. She advises: "In the airplane, I recommend not to wear white.

"I did twice in my 23 years as a pilot's wife at the beginning, and I got smudges on my jeans from bringing my luggage down from the overhead bins and pizza stains inside the airport that some other passenger had eaten and dripped some on the boarding gate seats.

"Do not wear complicated jumpsuits. Why? Because they're complicated. They're going to add stress to you, especially inside a tight, cramped lavatory inside the airplane.

"My travel tip is to pack that outfit and avoid wearing it in the airplane. Do not wear stiff leather or stiff denim, because it restricts your blood flow.

"While I sometimes wear trendy pieces, this video is going to focus on cosy, stretchy and versatile garments you should be wearing and a few to avoid. All that is so we maximise your comfort from boarding to baggage claim."

Whilst it might seem like straightforward guidance to steer clear of jumpsuits, dodging rigid fabrics is genuinely crucial. Although denim is typically deemed acceptable for air travel, experts actually caution against it owing to potential discomfort issues.

The cabin pressure experienced during flights triggers abdominal bloating, and inflexible materials can hamper movement whilst elevating the likelihood of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For both comfort and wellbeing, loose-fitting garments or athleisure wear are your best bet.

Why should you avoid it?

Several factors make denim a poor choice for plane journeys. Primarily, constricting waistbands can become painfully tight as your body expands due to reduced cabin pressure.

Beyond mere discomfort, restrictive garments can impede blood flow, heightening DVT risks. Additionally, heavyweight denim and belts frequently trigger delays at security screening points.

Put simply, this fabric presents multiple drawbacks for air travellers. Should you insist on wearing denim, ensure you select only high-stretch varieties.

Though donning a pair of jeans might seem like a smart move to save on luggage space, the drawbacks often surpass the benefits. The general advice leans towards opting for more comfortable alternatives such as joggers or leggings.

As we venture deeper into 2026, this nugget of wisdom tops Laurie's travel advice list. It's certainly worth bearing in mind before you embark on your next overseas adventure.
