These are the 10 most walkable places in Europe


When you're on holiday, one of the best things to do is just have a wander and explore. Rather than scheduling in loads of activities, museums and galleries and spending your time rushing miles between them, it's far more enjoyable to book a holiday somewhere walkable.


This will save you money on taxis and public transport, and gives a more authentic feel to trip away too. If you fancy a break where everything is close together, then you're in luck. Braw Scottish Tours analysed the walking distance and step count between the five main attractions in 30 of Europe's most popular cities. The research found the most walkable destinations - perfect for a low key holiday.


10. Kraków, Poland

Number 10 is Kraków - the historic capital of Poland. It has a walking distance of 6.9 km, taking visitors through its historic sites like Wawel Castle and Main Market Square. You'll take roughly 8,970 steps over 1.38 hours and get a good look at what this city has to offer.


9. Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt requires 6.6 km of walking to explore its main attractions, such as Römerberg and the Städel Museum. This equals about 8,580 steps and 1.32 hours, to explore the city's medieval and contemporary architecture.


8. Birmingham

The only UK city on the list is Birmingham at 6.3 km. With sites like the Bullring & Grand Central and the Jewellery Quarter, you can see the best of this city in roughly 8,190 steps and 1.26 hours.


7. Copenhagen, Denmark

Trendy Copenhagen's attractions are spread over 6.1 km. This includes the gorgeous Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn, totalling 7,930 steps and 1.22 hours.


6. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam can be explored over 5.9 km, leading visitors past the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House. This will take about 7,670 steps and 1.18 hours, and the walk will showcase the city's rich artistic heritage.


5. Prague, Czech Republic

Prague extends to 5.8 km, guiding walkers through its historic centre to landmarks like Prague Castle and Charles Bridge. To see the sights it will take roughly 7,540 steps and 1.16 hours.


4. Dublin, Republic of Ireland

Dublin stretches to 4.9 km, encompassing attractions like the Guinness Storehouse and Trinity College, about 6,370 steps and 0.98 hours, providing a mix of cultural and historical sites within a manageable distance.


3. Hamburg, Germany

The charming city of Hamburg requires a bit more effort, with a walking distance of 4.4 km to reach sites like Miniatur Wunderland and the Elbphilharmonie. In total, tourists can expect to walk 5,720 steps over 0.88 hours.


2. Milan, Italy

Milan follows closely at 3.8 km, offering visitors a dense cluster of landmarks such as the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. To explore the famous city of fashion, it'll take roughly 4,940 steps and 0.76 hours on foot, making it ideal for those who prefer short walks.


1. Istanbul, Turkey

In first place is Istanbul with a total walking distance of 2.5 km. This takes tourists past major attractions like Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar within a compact area. To explore, it'll only take about 3,250 steps and half an hour of walking. A visitor said on Tripadvisor: "Istanbul is a magical city. Phenomenal and historical buildings pepper this amazing place. Literally, it takes days to soak in the nuances and atmosphere of Istanbul. Take your time and don't be afraid to get lost."
