Tucked into a dramatic Derbyshire valley on the edge of the Peak District, this former spa town is about as landlocked as it gets. To feel a real sea breeze, you'd need to head west to the likes of Liverpool or east towards Skegness. But, as you wander along Matlock Bath's riverside promenade, you could be fooled into thinking you'd stumbled upon a British seaside resort.
The pretty town, which is more than 100 miles from the coast, has earned the fond nickname of the seaside town without the sea, thanks to streets packed with all the familiar trappings: old-fashioned sweet shops, arcades, quirky cafés and, most importantly, an abundance of fish and chip shops.
There are at least five chippies squeezed into this tiny stretch, and one customer even claimed the food rivalled that of more traditional seaside destinations.
"We go to Whitby every year and as anyone will tell you, it can't be beaten for fish and chips. Well hold up. Because this little place is on par with the best fish and chips I've ever had," they said of Tucker's Fish & Chips.
Another reviewer said Kostas Fish Bar served the "best fish and chips for miles".
But if there's no sea, you may wonder why people do after exploring the promenade and trying the fish and chips. Most visitors use it as a base for exploring the Peak District, with its abundance of walks.
While Mam Tor is one of the most popular, there are plenty of meandering walks right on the doorstep of Matlock, which has views over the Derwent Valley.
Chatsworth House, with its acres of land, is also a favourite among dog walkers and is about 25 minutes away. Its award-winning farm shop is well worth visiting, serving up proper farm-to-plate full English breakfasts.
Nearby market towns like Bakewell are worth a trip too, where you can try the original Bakewell Pudding, made with sweet almonds and baked fresh from the oven.
If a foodie trip is what you're after, The Balti restaurant is a long-standing favourite back in town, while attractions like the Heights of Abraham cable cars and the Gulliver's Kingdom theme park help keep the whole family entertained.
