News India Live, Digital Desk: In our busy lives, we fulfill a major part of our diet with ‘packaged’ items. But do you know that the small colored square marks on the bottom or back of the packet are not a design, but important signs of food safety? As per the rules of FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), these coding tell you how safe what you are eating is for your body.1. Red, Yellow and Green: ‘Traffic Light’ Coding On the lines of many countries, color coding is now being used in India to indicate the amount of salt, sugar and fat in food items: Color (Meaning) Suggestion (Action) Red (Red) It contains very high amount of fat, sugar or salt. Eat it very rarely or only occasionally. Orange/Yellow (Amber/Yellow) The amount of nutrients in it is average. (Medium). It can be eaten in limited quantities.Green (Green)This is a safe and healthy option for health. You can include it in your regular diet.2. New symbols of Veg and Non-Veg (Dietary Symbols) For decades we have been seeing green and brown circles, but now these have been changed to make identification easier: Green square (Green square): This is a sign of vegetarian food. Brown triangle (Brown triangle): Earlier it was round, but now ‘brown triangle’ is used for non-vegetarian food so that even visually impaired people can understand the difference by touch. Blue symbol (Blue symbol): This is often milk or dairy. Used for products.3. The game of ‘E’ numbers and additivesYou may have seen codes like E621 or E102 on the ingredients list on the back of the packet. These are international coding systems that represent food colors, preservatives and flavor enhancing chemicals. Tip: If a packet has too many ‘E’ codes, then understand that the food is ultra-processed.4. Color Blocks at the Bottom of the Packet (CMYK) Small blocks of blue, red, yellow and black are often made on the fold of the packet. Truth: These do not indicate the quality of the food, but the printing quality. These are called ‘printers color blocks’. These ensure that the packet is printed in the correct colors. What to look for while shopping? Food safety experts believe that just looking at the ‘expiry date’ is not enough. You should go to the ‘Nutritional Information’ table and see how many calories and how much ‘trans fat’ is there per 100 grams. If the amount of trans fat is high, it can be dangerous for your heart.
