Dev Surya Temple located in Aurangabad district of Bihar is visited by devotees during the festival of Chhath. This is the same holy place, where the history of worship of Sun God is centuries old. Every year, on the occasion of Chhath festival held in the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, lakhs of devotees gather here and offer Arghya to the setting (sinking) and rising (rising) Sun. It is believed that the Sun God is especially pleased by the worship done in this temple and every wish of the devotees is fulfilled. Generally, during the Chhath festival, Arghya is offered to the Sun God on the banks of a reservoir or river, but in the Dev Surya Temple of Bihar, special worship of Lord Sun is done during the Chhath festival.

The biggest feature of Dev Sun Temple is that it is the only west facing Sun Temple in the country, that is, its main gate opens towards the west. According to belief, this temple was built by Lord Vishwakarma in Treta Yuga. Local people believe that this is the same place where a king’s leprosy was cured by bathing in the water of Suryakund, after which the temple was established. This year, Chhath Mahaparva will start from 25 October 2025.

Every year on the occasion of Chhath, the view here is amazing. Lakhs of devotees take bath in Suryakund and offer Arghya to the Sun God. The chants of Chhathi Maiya and the echo of devotional songs are heard in the entire area. Aurangabad district administration makes special arrangements every year on this festival, so that the devotees coming from all over the country do not face any inconvenience.

Why is Dev Surya Temple special in Chhath Puja?

Arghya of the setting and rising sun

Devotees follow the tradition of offering Arghya to both the setting sun (at the time of sunset) and the rising sun (at the time of sunrise) in this temple during Chhath.

Large number of fasting devotees

Every Chhath, lakhs of devotees gather near the Dev Mandir and Suryakund from different parts of the district and state. For example, in the year 2024, about 15 lakh people had offered Arghya to the setting Sun in the Dev Surya Temple.

Sacred Reservoir/Suryakund

There is a Surya Kund near the temple where devotees take bath at the time of ‘Nahay-Khay’ and Astachal and Udayachal Surya Arghya. It is considered very important for bathing and puja, rituals.

faith in fulfillment of wish

Devotees believe that if worship is done wholeheartedly in this temple, then one gets the blessings of Sun God. Along with this, spiritual peace, health, prosperity and wishes are fulfilled.

Mythological beliefs to the temple

It is believed that after conquering Lanka, Lord Shri Ram worshiped Sun God here and with his blessings was freed from all the faults. Another story also says that this temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile. This is the reason why Dev Surya Temple is considered a very sacred place from religious point of view and of historical importance.

According to the verse written outside the temple, the construction of this temple was started by King Ila’s son Pururava Ail after 12 lakh 16 thousand years of Treta Yuga had passed.

According to another legend, Muhi al-Din Mohammed was known as Alamgir or Aurangzeb. He destroyed temples all over India and reached Dev in Aurangabad. In such a situation, the priests here requested not to demolish this temple but Aurangzeb left from there saying that if your God has the power then its door should be towards the west. According to beliefs, the priests kept praying to the Sun God throughout the night that O Lord, Aurangzeb’s words should be proved right. It is said that when the priest reached the temple the next morning, the main gate was facing west instead of east, since then the main gate of the Dev Surya Temple is facing west.
