Anyone looking to improve their health can evaluate their lifestyle using a free NHS test. Available online, the quiz takes about five minutes to complete and helps people understand how healthy their lifestyle is.

The Healthy Choices Quiz is available on the NHS Better Health website. To participate, people will be asked to answer questions about six lifestyle areas before receiving their results. Everyone gets a score out of ten, and the results include a summary detailing performance in each section.

For most sections, people will receive a label telling them whether this is an area they should focus on. Anyone who scores nine or less can choose whether to receive emails with suggestions for areas they can improve. Participants can also see recommended apps and advice to help them make lasting change.

  • 'I'm a psychiatrist and there's 1 thing you shouldn't eat in the morning for good mental health'

  • 'Ideal amount' of dark chocolate to reduce major heart health risks

The six areas covered in the quiz are eating, alcohol, movement, smoking and vaping, mental health, and sleep. The NHS says the quiz is suitable for adults aged 18 and over who don't have an existing health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease.

The quiz includes questions such as how often you eat pre-prepared meals, how much physical activity is involved in your work, and how stressed you feel. As such, everyone's results will be tailored to their lifestyle.

The NHS explains: "The Healthy Choices Quiz is a health and wellbeing quiz. It suggests apps and resources, based on your answers, to help you live a healthier life." The advice continues: "It's important to remember that this quiz does not provide a medical diagnosis, it assesses your lifestyle and suggests ways to improve."

The different criteria are shown on the website. For example, the webpage explains that the alcohol section is based on the government guidelines for safe drinking, while the movement section is based on the government guidelines to do 150 minutes of exercise a week.

"If you score a zero in alcohol or smoke tobacco products, your overall score will be limited to a three. This is because smoking and drinking alcohol in this way can seriously impact your health," the NHS adds.

Once the quiz is completed, the results highlight various free resources available to help people make healthier choices. For example, the NHS offers a range of free apps, including NHS Drink Free Days, NHS Couch to 5K, and NHS Active 10 Walking Tracker.

Apps like the NHS Active 10 Walking Tracker could help users decrease their risk of serious health conditions. The description for the app explains: "Just ten minutes of brisk walking every day can get your heart pumping and can make you feel more energetic, as well as lowering your risk of serious illnesses like heart disease and type 2 diabetes."

It adds: "Going for a brisk walk is a great way to clear your head and improve your mood." The NHS says you should contact your GP if you're worried about your health, or call 111 if you need immediate help.
