Most people want to see rude commuters slapped with a fine of up to £20 if they put their feet on the seats. Shoes on the seats and litter were named the top bad habits that fellow passengers hate most in a recent poll.
Research by rail travel company JRPass asked what gets people's goat when travelling to and from work. Applying make-up and swigging alcohol were other examples of bad etiquette that most annoy passengers. 74% of people said leaving litter on a train is never acceptable. Despite this, one-third admit they're guilty of it, with a 10% saying they 'often' litter on trains.
Commuters feel so strongly about it that three-quarters said litterbugs should be slapped with a fine, with the preferred penalty being between £11 and £20. Putting feet on seats, saw 70% condemning the habit - and 11% admitted they do it regularly.
Loitering in doorways when there's space in the carriage annoyed 68% of travellers, despite 38% admitting they're guilty of this habit. Similarly, bags taking up empty seats when people are standing was found to be unacceptable by two-thirds of those surveyed, but 41% admit they often do this.
Another common annoying behaviour is people listening to music or videos out loud without headphones. Other bad habits include speaking loudly on the phone, having loud conversations and eating hot or strong-smelling food. Passengers drinking alcohol also proved to be a bugbear to 46% of commuters, while putting make-up on upset 23% of people.
Haroun Khan, Founder of JRPass, said: "In countries like Japan, a culture of respect helps keep train journeys comfortable and calm. The findings suggest UK passengers are increasingly looking for clearer guidelines too and, in some cases, are supportive of enforcement when these boundaries are repeatedly ignored."
