New Delhi. Delhi’s Saket Court has today given its verdict in the defamation case filed by social activist Medha Patkar against Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena. In a big relief to LG VK Saxena, the court has acquitted him of all the charges leveled against him. Medha Patkar had filed this defamation case against VK Saxena in the year 2000. Saxena was then the head of ‘Council for Civil Liberties’, an Ahmedabad-based NGO. Patkar had alleged that Saxena published advertisements against him and the Narmada Bachao Andolan, which damaged his image.
Last year, during the hearing of this case in Saket court, Medha Patkar had sought permission to present a new witness. Judge Raghav Sharma had rejected that request of Medha Patkar. Questioning the credibility of the sudden appearance of a new witness, the judge had harshly remarked that it was a deliberate attempt to delay the trial. The court had said that all the listed witnesses to the case have been examined.
Judge Sharma had said that this case has been pending for the last two decades and cannot be delayed any longer. He had also said that after the case has been going on for so many years, if the parties are allowed to present new witnesses arbitrarily for so long, then the cases will never be settled, because the litigants can present new witnesses in the court whenever they want as per their wish. Due to this, the litigation will continue to drag on and no solution will be found.
