When faith reaches its peak at the sacred confluence, it is celebrated as the 'Magh Mela'. Devotees engaging in Kalpavas, a dedicated spiritual retreat, must adhere to strict guidelines. These customs are believed to lead to liberation (Moksha). A key tradition within this practice is Shaiyaa Daan, which refers to the act of donating a bed.
Kalpavas signifies a period of disciplined living and purity by the confluence. Religious texts suggest that the completion of Kalpavas is marked by charitable acts performed by the devotee, tailored to their faith and resources. Among these acts, Shaiyaa Daan, or the donation of a bed and related items, holds significant importance.
During Kalpavas, devotees typically sleep on the ground and engage in intense penance. Upon concluding their retreat, they are expected to donate a bed, along with a mattress, sheets, pillows, and sometimes a cot, to enhance the comfort of others.
Shaiyaa Daan is steeped in religious significance, as indicated by various Puranic tales. It is believed that this act not only cleanses one of their earthly sins but also brings tranquility to their ancestors. Those who perform Shaiyaa Daan in accordance with the rituals after completing Kalpavas are said to avoid the sufferings of Yamaloka (the realm of Yama, the god of death) and attain a heavenly abode.
This act transcends mere material donation; it embodies the essence of sacrificing personal comforts for the welfare of others. Astrological and spiritual beliefs suggest that Shaiyaa Daan can mitigate various planetary afflictions in one’s horoscope, ushering in happiness and prosperity into the household.
When engaging in Shaiyaa Daan, it is essential to donate a complete bed set, which typically includes:
A new mattress and sheets
Pillows along with a blanket or quilt
If feasible, a mosquito net and an umbrella. This donation should be presented to a deserving Brahmin or a needy individual with sincere devotion, accompanied by an appropriate offering.
