IT services major Infosys has begun collecting household electricity consumption data from employees working under its hybrid work model, as part of its long-term sustainability and clean energy strategy.

Survey linked to hybrid work footprint

With employees spending a significant portion of their work hours at home and attending office for a minimum of 10 days each month, Infosys has acknowledged that its environmental footprint now extends beyond office campuses. In an email to staff, Chief Financial Officer Jayesh Sanghrajka said electricity used while working from home also contributes to the company’s overall greenhouse gas emissions.

He urged employees to participate in a work-from-home electricity consumption survey, stating that accurate data would help Infosys strengthen its emissions reporting and design more effective sustainability initiatives.

What employees are being asked

The survey seeks details on household electricity usage to work, including the use of fans, air conditioners, heaters, lighting, computers and other devices, along with their wattage. Employees are also asked whether they use rooftop solar power and to share any innovative energy-saving practices they may have adopted at home.

According to employees cited in media reports, the exercise is also aimed at promoting awareness about energy conservation, particularly since Infosys campuses consume 50–60 per cent less electricity than conventional office buildings.

Sustainability milestones highlighted

Infosys, which employs over 3 lakh people globally, has pursued sustainability initiatives for more than 15 years. The company has already achieved carbon neutrality ahead of global timelines, reduced per capita energy consumption by 55 per cent since 2008, and sourced around 77 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy in the last financial year.

The company operates its own renewable energy plants with a total capacity of 60 MW and was the first Indian software firm to propose a large solar park in Karnataka in 2014.

Revalidating earlier estimates

Infosys was among the first companies to estimate and disclose work-from-home emissions in 2020–21. The current survey is intended to revalidate earlier assumptions and ensure accuracy in emissions reporting as hybrid work becomes a permanent feature.
