Maharashtra is observing three days of state mourning from January 28 to January 30, 2026following the death of Ajit Pawar in a plane crash. The Government of Maharashtra has issued detailed instructions outlining what will remain closed and which services will continue to function during this period.


What is closed during the mourning period


All state government offices across Maharashtra will remain closed as a mark of respect. Official programmes, government celebrations, and entertainment events organised by the state have been suspended. The national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings where it is regularly hoisted. Administrative work not to essential services has been deferred during these three days.


What remains open and operational


Despite the shutdown of government offices, essential services will continue without disruption. Hospitals, emergency medical services, ambulances, police operations, fire services, and disaster response units will function normally. Public utilities such as electricity, water supply, sanitation, and essential municipal services will also remain operational.


Public transport services, including local trains, buses, metro services, and intercity transportare expected to run as scheduled. Educational institutions, private offices, banks, and commercial establishments will follow their regular schedules unless separate local orders are issued.


Restrictions on official events


The government has clearly stated that no official entertainment or celebratory events will be permitted during the mourning period. District administrations and police authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with these directions.


The state mourning period is being observed to honour the late Deputy Chief Minister, while ensuring that daily life and critical public services continue smoothly across Maharashtra.
