New Delhi: Team India all-rounder Washington Sundar is expected to be fit for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to begin on February 7, reports Cricbuzz. He has been out of action since the opening ODI match against New Zealand in Baroda on January 11.

Sundar has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, and the selection committee sources told Cricbuzz that the all-rounder is expected to be ready for the ICC event. After the ongoing five-match T20I bilateral series against New Zealand, the Men in Blue will assemble in Mumbai on February 3, and are likely to play a warm-up match against South Africa at DY Patil Stadium on February 4.

Sundar’s participation in the warm-up game is not clear, but the selectors expect him to be fit for the World Cup. The BCCI released a statement after Sundar’s injury, saying that the all-rounder reported an acute onset of discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand.

“He will undergo further scans, following which the BCCI Medical Team will seek expert opinion,” the statement added.

Tilak Varma likely to be ready for T20 World Cup 2026

According to the same report, the left-handed batter Tilak Varma is also expected to be fit for the 2026 T20 World Cup. He was sidelined after a minor surgery in January and is likely to be available for the warm-up match on February 4. The BCCI, in a statement, said that Tilak was discharged from the hospital after undergoing surgery for an abdominal issue.

“Tilak will resume physical training and gradually return to skill-based activities once his symptoms have fully resolved and wound healing is satisfactory,” the statement added.

The selection committee is also backing Sanju Samson despite the opener’s poor form in the ongoing series against New Zealand. He has registered underwhelming scores of 10, 6, 0 and 24 in the five-match series. Ishan Kishan might replace Sanju as an opener in the World Cup, but his spot in the squad is safe for now.
