New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the rules framed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to prevent discrimination based on caste, religion, and disability in higher education institutions and to promote equality. Upper-caste groups across the country were protesting against these new UGC rules.

A petition challenging these rules was filed in the Supreme Court. The petition was heard on January 29, 2026. The hearing was conducted by a bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant, who, considering the seriousness of the matter and other factors, stayed the implementation of the new UGC rules.
