Tucked away in the heart of Yorkshire lies a stunning waterfall encircled by gothic cavern walls that loom "like a castle."
On Pen-y-ghent's western flank, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park and near the Yorkshire Three Peaks, sits a collapsed cavern called Hull Pot. According to The Yorkshire Dales, Hull Pot is England's largest natural hole, and it's less than atwo-hour drive from Huddersfield.
This natural marvel makes an ideal focal point for a walk, with the structure spanning 300 feet in length and plunging 60 feet deep, according to Hill Explorer. Boasting its own waterfall within the pot, the water then vanishes underground before resurfacing at Brants Gill Head, a stone's throw from the Pennine Way and Ribble Way close to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, reports Yorkshire Live.
During particularly wet conditions, the waterfall becomes torrential – filling the pot to capacity and cascading down the hillside.
The Reluctant Explorers noted: "After SUPER heavy rain you might even see it when the pot is full... like some kind of giant's bath... not that I'd attempt a soak in it! !".
A late 18th-century guidebook described it as appearing "would have appeared like the inside of an enormous old Gothic castle, the high ruinous walls of which were left standing after the roof was fallen in."
For those keen to witness this hidden waterfall, there are two routes available.
You can head directly to Hull Pot, making it your primary destination. In this case, start from Horton in Ribblesdale for a round trip of just under four miles.
Alternatively, if you fancy a loop, you could weave it into the Pen y ghent trail. Should you choose this route - the Reluctant Explorers suggest making Hull Pot your first stop, tackling the walk in an anticlockwise direction to dodge hurtling downhill.
For those seeking something more demanding - from Hull Pot carry on along the Pennine Journey footpath heading north-east over Horton Moor.
Upon reaching the Foxup Moor vicinity, straight north of Plover Hill, a track branches south climbing directly up an incline to reach the hill's peak. After arriving at this vantage point, you can press on southward to Pen-y-ghent before making your way back to Horton.
Car parking can be found at the Yorkshire Dales National Park car park in Horton in Ribblesdale.
