Washington : State Senate has formally recognised India’s 77th Republic Day, adopting a resolution that reflects the long-standing democratic traditions of India and the growing influence of the Indian American community across the United States. The measure underscores shared values and expanding cooperation between India and Washington state in several key sectors.

Bipartisan Support in Olympia

The resolution, officially numbered Senate Resolution No. 8674, was passed in Olympia with unanimous bipartisan backing. Lawmakers from both parties voted in favour, highlighting the broad consensus around strengthening ties with India. The resolution acknowledged India’s democratic legacy while pointing to the deepening relationship between India and Washington state.

Focus on Shared Priorities

In its text, the Senate resolution identified agriculture, trade, technology, and critical and emerging technologies as areas of mutual interest. These sectors were cited as central to the evolving partnership, reflecting economic and innovation-driven connections that benefit both regions.

Leadership Behind the Resolution

The initiative was introduced by State Senator Manka Dhingra, an Indian American legislator representing the 45th Legislative District. Support came from State Senator Vandana Slatter of the 48th Legislative District. Their leadership was credited with advancing recognition of India’s national milestone within the state legislature.

Capitol Reception and Cultural Events

To commemorate the adoption of the resolution, the Consulate General of India hosted a reception at the Washington State Capitol. The event brought together state senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other invited dignitaries. Attendees also experienced cultural performances, adding a ceremonial dimension to the legislative recognition.

Proclamations Across the US Northwest

Beyond Washington state, several US states in the Northwest issued proclamations honouring India’s Republic Day. Alaska, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, and Washington joined in acknowledging the occasion, reflecting the widespread presence and contributions of Indian and Indian American communities across the region.

He noted that Indian-led solutions are reaching large populations not only domestically but across the global south, with measurable impact in health, agriculture, digital public infrastructure, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

Celebrations in Seattle

The Consulate General of India organised two major events in Seattle on January 26. In the morning, the Indian national flag was unfurled atop the Federal Reserve building in downtown Seattle, followed by a reading of excerpts from the President of India’s address. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson attended the ceremony, along with a 30-member delegation from Montana. The programme featured patriotic poetry and a traditional Kuchipudi dance performance.

Evening Reception and Community Recognition

An evening reception at the Bell Harbor Conference Center brought together Washington state officials, technology leaders, and representatives of the Indian American community. During the event, six newly elected Indian American city council members from Washington were recognised for their public service and role in expanding representation in local government.
