France Children Social Media Ban: Now France’s name is also going to be added to the list of countries that have banned social media for children. The National Assembly of France has approved a bill to ban the use of social media by children under 15 years of age. In this bill, it has been proposed to ban social networks and all functionalities to social networking for children. Now this bill will be sent to the Senate and as soon as it is passed from there, it will take the form of law.
If this bill becomes law, children under 15 years of age will not be able to use social media platforms in France. That means platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat will be out of the reach of children. The government believes that this will improve the mental health, studies and social behavior of children.
This step of France is believed to be inspired by Australia. Australia already bans social media use by children under 16 years of age. Now France is also moving in the same direction. French President Emmanuel Macron has on several occasions previously held social media responsible for increasing violence and mental pressure among the youth. In his New Year address, he had appealed to parents to keep their children away from social media and screens.
Macron wants this law to be implemented before the start of the new academic session in September. Presenting this bill, Laure Miller said, ‘We want to set clear boundaries. Our children are studying less, sleeping less, but comparing themselves with each other more.” He further said, “This is a fight for a free mind.”
France is not the only country taking such steps. After Australia, now countries like Britain, Denmark, Spain and Greece are also considering banning the use of social media by children. Not only this, the European Parliament has also demanded the European Union to set the minimum age for children to access social media.
Governments clearly believe that without any control, social media is having a negative impact on children’s thinking, sleep and studies. In such a situation, these decisions are being considered a big step towards a better future and mental freedom of children.
