Bharat Bhushan: The 1950s were important for the country as well as Indian cinema. After independence, when the country was taking shape, experiments were being done in the film industry in music, camera and other departments. Dev Anand, Rajkumar, Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar had become successful heroes of the film industry. Raj Kapoor’s film ‘Aag’ was released on 6 August 1948. This was the first film directed and produced by Raj Kapoor. Just 7 years before this, i.e. in the year 1941, an actor had emerged in the film world. He made his debut in the film industry in the year 1941 with the film Chitralekha, but he had to struggle for a decade. In 1952, a film came which made this handsome actor popular in the entire country. The songs filmed on this artist had touched the hearts of even people with little understanding of music. Here we are talking about actor Bharat Bhushan, who once challenged Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor with his acting and beauty. Bharat Bhushan, who was on top in the film world for a decade, met a very sad end. After the death of Bharat Bhushan, who reached the state of poverty, his close ones did not even come to support him. No artist associated with Bollywood came to pay his last respects.

After watching the movie, my father beat me as soon as he reached home.

Born on June 14, 1920 in Meerut, Bharat Bhushan’s father Raibahadur Motilal was a lawyer. His wealth and status are such that whenever he passes through any road in the city, there is no dearth of people who greet him. Landlord Raibahadur Motilal wanted his son to become a lawyer like him and earn fame, but Bharat Bhushan wanted to become an actor. Bharat Bhushan himself had confessed in an interview that his father had gone out of the city for some work. After this he went to watch a movie with friends. When he returned, his father came to know. After this the father beat Bharat Bhushan badly. After this, emotional Bharat Bhushan started living separately from his father.

Was interested in acting since college

Bharat Bhushan was very unfortunate since childhood. His mother died within 2 years of his birth. Obviously he couldn’t even tell what his mother’s face was like. He also had an elder brother. After the death of his mother, Bharat Bhushan along with his elder brother came to Aligarh to live with his grandfather. While graduating from Dharam Samaj College, Aligarh, he started getting inclined towards films. His elder brother was a film producer and the owner of Ideal Studios. When I asked my father for permission to go to the movies, I got ‘no’. Against his father’s decision, he went to Kolkata and later made his mark in Bombay.

Did first role in ‘Bhakt Kabir’

When he reached Mumbai, he was impressed by the glamor of the place, but soon he also realized that he would have to struggle a lot. He started making rounds of studios. According to media reports, before coming to Bombay, a person from Kolkata gave him a letter. He was also aware of the film world. When Bharat Bhushan reached Mumbai, he gave a letter to the famous director Mehboob Khan. At that time Mehbooh Khan had finalized the star cast for ‘Alibaba Chalis Chor’. He was very disappointed when Mehboob Khan refused the role. After this, while visiting the studios, Bharat Bhushan came to know that director Rameshwar Sharma was making the film ‘Bhakt Kabir’. Someone else had got the lead role. Rameshwar offered him the role of Kashi Naresh in the film. Along with this, he was hired for Rs 60 per month.

In this way, he did the first role of his life in the film ‘Bhakt Kabir’ released in 1942. There is a twist in this too. Actually, the film ‘Chitralekha’ starring Bharat Bhushan was released in the year 1941 and was a hit. It was directed by Kidar Sharma. Whereas ‘Bhakt Kabir’ was released in the year 1942. Very few people would know that ‘Chitralekha’ was the second biggest hit of the year 1941.

Worked in 15 films in 9 years

When ‘Bhakt Kabir’ was released, Bharat Bhushan’s role also came into discussion. Who knew that this role would prove to be lucky for the actor. After this, many films came in Bharat Bhushan’s kitty. It is also true that the actor struggled for many years to act in good films. After ‘Chitralekha’, Bharat Bhushan worked in about 15 films from 1943 to 1952. These included Bhaichara (1943), Sawan (1945), Suhaag Raat (1948), Udhar (1949), Bhai Behen (1950) and Aankhen (1950). Bharat Bhushan’s brilliant work in all these films was appreciated.

The success of ‘Baiju-Bawra’ made the actor rich

In the year 1954, ‘Aurat Teri Yehi Kahani’ and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ were released, in which Bharat Bhushan Kamal’s acting was praised. ‘Baiju-Bawra’ came this year, which changed the fortunes of Bharat Bhushan. This film was a super-duper hit. This year, all three films showered huge money on Bharat Bhushan. When the bank balance became too much, Bharat Bhushan bought two bungalows in Mumbai. It is a different matter that even before the film ‘Baiju Bawra’ came out, he had bought a bungalow in Santa Cruz, Mumbai. This bungalow was near Asha Parekh’s bungalow. With the money received from ‘Baiju Bawra’, Bharat Bhushan bought another bungalow in Pali Hill and shifted to the same. He also bought a bungalow in Pune, some distance away from Mumbai, where he used to visit often. Apart from this, Bharat Bhushan started a line of expensive cars.

Got success like this… money filled in bank account

Achieving success and managing it are two different things. Bharat Bhushan was getting the first thing easily, but he made a mistake in handling it. Bharat Bhushan’s elder brother was also a producer. He also advised Bharat Bhushan to become a producer. He accepted his elder brother’s advice and produced two films ‘Basant Bahar’ and ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’. Both these films became superhit. Bharat Bhushan’s coffers were filled and he had a lot of money.

Got ruined while trying to make nephew a hero

According to media reports, Bharat Bhushan was also successful as a producer. Meanwhile, elder brother Ramesh encouraged him to make more films. Ramesh said to make his son a hero. Bharat Bhushan obeyed his brother and made him a hero. After this, Bharat Bhushan’s fate turned sour. After this, all the films made by Bharat Bhushan flopped. Bharat Bhushan had to sell everything in his house and became destitute. The situation became such that they came on the road.

The last days of life were full of pain

One by one all the bungalows of Bharat Bhushan were sold. The caravan of cars also had to be sold. It is said that Amitabh Bachchan saw him at a bus stop while he was standing in line. It is even said that he also worked as a guard. His daughter Aparajita clarifies this and calls it a rumour. At the age of 72, on January 27, 1992, Bharat Bhushan said goodbye to the world during treatment in a general hospital. It is said that no Bollywood celebrity attended his death. After success in the film world, Bharat Bhushan, whom she carried on her shoulders, did not even get the shoulder of any celebrity.
