A recent report from the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions revealed that 71 fugitives sought by the Indian government were identified in foreign nations during the 2024-25 period. This marks the highest number recorded in the past 12 years.




According to the report, the number of fugitives located abroad has fluctuated over the last decade, with figures ranging from 15 in 2013 to 42 in 2015, culminating in the current total of 71.




The ministry's annual report also highlighted that 27 fugitives were repatriated to India in the last financial year. Additionally, it noted that 203 fugitives wanted by other nations were found within India during the same timeframe.




Detailing the operations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which serves as the National Central Bureau for Interpol in India, the report indicated that 74 Letters Rogatory were dispatched to foreign authorities from April 2024 to March 2025. These letters serve as judicial requests for international cooperation in ongoing investigations.




Out of the 74 Letters Rogatory, 54 were related to CBI cases, while 20 were associated with state law enforcement and other central agencies. The report confirmed that 47 of these requests were fully executed, while 29 were either closed or partially executed.




As of March 31, 2025, there were 533 Letters Rogatory pending with various countries, with 276 linked to CBI cases and 257 to state police and other central agencies.




The report also mentioned that 32 Letters Rogatory and treaty-based requests were received from multiple countries seeking assistance in criminal investigations.




Furthermore, Interpol issued 126 red notices to the National Central Bureau, which are requests for the provisional arrest of individuals pending extradition. Additionally, 89 blue notices were issued to gather information about individuals' identities or activities, along with 24 yellow notices for missing persons and seven black notices concerning unidentified bodies. A green notice was also issued to alert member countries about individuals posing potential threats to public safety.




Lastly, the CBI processed over 22,200 applications for renunciation of Indian citizenship through the Ministry of Home Affairs portal.
