It may appear to be just another village, but this scenic spot in the Irish countryside is far more renowned than some visitors might expect.
Inistioge ranks among the country's most stunning villages, frequently praised for its abundant "charm" as it nestles within the Nore Valley. Its tranquil setting helps foster a feeling of serenity, as it's encircled by sweeping landscapes, including the river on which it's situated. Running through the idyllic village is the River Nore, complemented by the striking 10-arch stone bridge that forms the centrepiece of Inistioge. It was constructed in 1765 following a devastating flood that swept away its predecessor and has stood firm ever since.
Despite its modest size, the village possesses a rich history which can be discovered through its many buildings scattered throughout the area.
Among these are the ruins of the Woodstock House and Estate, the remnants of a Palladian mansion thought to originate from 1745 and created by Francis Bindon.
During a trip to the old ruins, one visitor was astonished by the magnificent gardens concealed within the estate. They shared on TripAdvisor: "We had no idea what to expect when we entered the garden and the arboretum, but it turned out to be a real secret garden, hidden in the hills above Inistioge."
Another visitor added: "Having driven through the beautiful village of Inistioge many times over the years, we finally got around to doing the Woodstock Gardens loop walk this week and were rewarded by a wonderful walk from the village along the river Nore, before heading up to the house and gardens.
"The walk was great, but we were amazed by the scale and grandeur of the gardens, culminating in what must be the nicest tearoom anywhere (at least on a sunny day! )."
Yet the true highlight of Inistioge is the village itself – serving as the picture-perfect backdrop for countless TV productions and films.
The settlement has appeared in pictures including Circle of Friends, Widow's Peak, and The Secret Scripture, with numerous A-list celebrities gracing its charming streets.
Hollywood stars such as Minnie Driver, famous for Good Will Hunting and Tarzan, alongside the late Natasha Richardson, celebrated for Parent Trap and The Handmaid's Tale, have all filmed within the village. They've been joined by other prominent names including Mia Farrow and Rooney Mara.
The picturesque surroundings have made it an ideal location for period dramas and modern films depicting quaint rural communities. Among these productions was the recent romantic film, Love's Portrait, which came out in 2022, notably showcasing the village's striking bridge.
