New Delhi: On the eve of India’s 77th Republic Day, the Cetre announced a total of 982 service medals for police, home guards,fire, civil defence and correctional services personnel. While Jammu and Kashmir led the list of gallantry award winners, the Unio Territory was followed by Maharashtra.
This year, the award included 125 Medals of Gallantry, 101 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 756 Medals for Meritorious Service. As many as 35 personnel from Naxal-affected 45 from Jammu and Kashmir, five from the northeast, and 4areas, 0 from other regions were awarded for their bravery, according to the Home Ministry.
The J&K Police personnel received a total of 33 awards. Among the awardees was IPS Tanushree, along with Senior Superintendent of Police Sahabir Nawab and Deputy Superintendent of police Javaid Ahmad Lone. Maharashtra received 31 gallantry awards. Of the, 28 gallantry awards went to constables. The Central Reserve Police Force received 12 gallantry awards.
Apart from them, four fire services officers were awarded for gallantry, five named for the President’s Medal for their exemplary services and 34 personnel warded for Meritorious Service. Home guard and civil defence services have been honoured with three President’s Medals and 33 medals for Meritorious Service.
“Out of 101 President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), 89 have been awarded to the police service, five to the fire service, three to the civil defence and home guard service and four to the correctional service. Out of 756 Medals for Meritorious Service, 664 have been awarded to police service, 34 to fire service, 33 to civil defence and home guard service, and 25 to correctional service,” a statement said.
Medal for Gallantry and President’s Medal for Gallantry are awarded to defence personnel for ‘conspicuous act of gallantry’ and a ‘rare conspicuous act of gallantry’ respectively. The awards are awarded in recognition of exceptional courage.
