There is nothing better than a strong cup of tea to get you through the morning, and it turns out you can get a much tastier beverage while paying half the price. Which?, the UK's consumer protection organisation, has decided to find out where you can buy the best teabags by holding a massive taste test of the most popular brands.

They assembled a panel of 79 long-time tea drinkers who examined 12 of Britain's most popular tea companies such as Yorkshire Tea, PG Tips, Tetley and Twinings. However, the testers also tried out all the supermarket brands such as ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose to see if pricing made any difference. Each person on the panel rated the cups of tea based of appearance, aroma, mouthfeel and taste in a private booth where the brand labels were hidden to avoid bias.

Which British brand has the best teabags?

ASDA's Everyday tea bags were found to be the best in the nation, as the cuppa was well-presented and had the most inviting aroma.

They said: "Asda's Everyday Tea Bags (£1.20 for 80 bags) nabbed the top spot, along with Which?'s Best Buy and Great Value endorsements, with an impressive score of 72%.

"The panel gave it high marks for aroma and appearance, with more than two-thirds (68%) judging the colour as spot-on. Flavour-wise, around half (49%) found it just right."

Yorkshire Tea, which is often believed to be the UK's tastiest beverage, actually came second-to-last place with 32% of tasters stating it was not strong enough for them.

In last place tied with Tesco Original and Twinnings, which cost four times the price of ASDA's teabags at £4.80 for 80 bags.

Twinings struggled to get a good score when it came to taste as it was not strong enough for most testers, but 60% liked the tea colour and believed the bitterness level was just right.

Tesco Original also scored well when it bitter balancing, but many testers stated their cup of tea was too dark and simply not strong enough to be a good brew.

The results show that paying more does not automatically deliver better value for money or a better-tasting tea so it is always worth trying out the supermarket brands.

However, it was a very close-run contest, as ASDA's Everyday teabags only narrowly claimed first place by just one point.

PG Tips Original (£3 for 80 bags), Tetley Original (£2.50 for 80 bags) and Sainsbury's Red Label (£1.25 for 80 bags) all followed closely behind and tied for second with scores of 71%.
