Netflix have postponed a live stream of an American rock climber scaling the Taipei 101 skyscraper due to rainy weather conditions.

Alex Honnold, known for pushing the limits of what's possible on sheer rock faces, was set to climb the 1,667ft tower in Taiwan without a safety rope, however a last minute decision has pushed the deathly event back.

The thrill-seeking 40-year-old was set to climb the building in Asia at 9am local time, 1am on Saturday morning, January 24, in the UK. Just 30 minutes before the high-risk mount was due to be broadcast the streaming service announced there would be a delay due to rain.

Honnold is expected to attempt the crazy task a full day later, now Sunday morning in the UK. It is hoped that at this time the weather will clear as the current drizzle has made surfaces slippier, adding to the risk of the already extremely tough climb.

Netflix said that the decision would be left in Honnold's hands as his life is on the line. Netflix's announcement said: "Skyscraper Live was originally scheduled to air on January 23. Due to weather conditions, the live event is postponed, and will now stream on Saturday, January 24 at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT."

The event is expected to be broadcast live for two hours, with there being a small 10 second delay for viewers in case something does occur to Honnold.

The climber has addressed the risks of his mission, speaking about the impact his death would have on his two young children. He is father to two daughters, June, born in 2022, and Alice, who is one.

"Baby Alice wouldn’t remember. Baby June probably wouldn’t remember. She’ll be 4 in another month," he said. "It’d be felt, and obviously it’d be super hard for [wife] Sanni, but they’d be well provided for.

"I don’t feel like I’d be leaving them in the lurch. They wouldn’t even necessarily be traumatised their whole lives."

The spectacle has received backlash from some, including a Wall Street Journal columnist, who branded it "voyeuristic, ghoulish and irresponsible".
