Washington, January 23. America has formally ended its membership of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Trump administration said that this decision has been taken in fulfillment of the promise made on the first day of President Donald Trump. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a joint statement that the withdrawal was implemented through an executive order signed by President Trump. The purpose of this decision is to free the US from WHO ‘restrictions’ and compensate for the damage caused by the failures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Today, the United States withdrew from the World Health Organization, as President Trump promised on his first day in office. This step is taken in response to WHO’s failures during COVID-19, which have cost the American people dearly,” the statement said. The administration accused the WHO of deviating from its original purpose and working against US interests. The statement said that America has been a founding member and the largest financial contributor to WHO, yet the organization ignored America’s interests.

The Trump administration claims that WHO pursued a political and bureaucratic agenda that was influenced by countries that are hostile to the US. Additionally, the organization failed to share timely and accurate information during the pandemic. The statement also said that these failures could have resulted in the loss of American lives and that these mistakes were later hidden in the name of ‘public health interests’. The administration also alleged that WHO’s behavior after the US decision to withdraw was abusive.

The organization reportedly refused to hand over the American flag at its headquarters and claimed it did not approve of the US withdrawal. “Despite being our founding member and biggest supporter, the humiliation of America continued till the last day,” the joint statement said. The US government made it clear that now its contact with WHO will be limited only to completing the withdrawal process and protecting the health and safety of American citizens. All US funding and staffing to WHO has been immediately terminated.

The administration said the United States will now lead global health efforts through direct bilateral partnerships with countries and trusted health institutions. The statement described WHO as a heavy-handed and inefficient bureaucracy. The Trump administration said the decision was taken to honor those Americans who lost loved ones in the pandemic, especially the elderly who died in nursing homes and those businesses who suffered huge losses due to Covid restrictions. Let us tell you that America became a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has been its biggest donor for a long time.
