Nick Kyrgios has slammed his tennis racket into the Australian Open court during his first-round doubles match with Thanasi Kokkinakis. The former Wimbledon finalist also overshadowed their match by arguing with umpire and receiving an audible obscenity warning.
Kokkinakis and Kyrgios lost the first set 6-4 against Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans in an all-Australian affair. It was then in the second set that tensions started to boil over, after Kyrgios hit a backhand return way too long at deuce in the fourth game with him and Kokkinakis leading 2-1.
The racket was thrown at the court barely seconds after the ball landed out of bounds, and Kyrgios also shouted in frustration in response to his mistake. While he walked to the net and retrieved his racket, television coverage cut to a child holding a cardboard sign that said: "Nick, can I please have a smashed racket? You are my idol."
A rowdy crowd for the night session responded raucously to the flashpoint, and the umpire called for quiet before the match resumed. The official had to do so again later on, which led to boos from those in attendance.
