Davos, 21 January. US President Donald Trump gave a big hint regarding the trade agreement between India and America at the World Economic Forum (WEF) here on Wednesday, saying that there will be a ‘great’ trade agreement between the two countries. In this sequence, Trump again praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he is a good person and his friend.
Trump expressed confidence that there will be a good agreement between the two countries. This statement has come at a time when America has imposed 50 percent tariff on India. It is one of the highest in the world. Both countries are talking about continuing trade talks. But, no agreement has been reached till now.
Speaking to Indian media in Davos, Trump expressed hope that India and America will make a good deal. He said, ‘I respect your PM very much. He is a wonderful person and my friend. We will make a good agreement.
Sergio Gore has also hinted at a deal.
Sergio Gore, who recently took over as the new US Ambassador to India, also strongly supported the trade talks while expressing confidence in India-US relations. Gore had said that both countries are fully committed to reaching an agreement. He had described the friendship between Trump and PM Modi as genuine and had said that the US President can visit India in the next one-two years.
Gore had said that the India-US relationship is based not only on common interests but also on dialogue at the highest political level. He also said that true friends may sometimes disagree. But, in the end they resolve their differences.
Gore had also said, ‘Remember, India is the largest country in the world, so it is not easy to complete this task. But, we are determined to get there. While trade is very important to our relationship, we will continue to work together in other very important areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education and health.’
Gore had also praised PM Modi a lot. He was described as an extraordinary leader. He had said, ‘I was with the President… and during the dinner just after the New Year, he narrated the experience of his incredible visit here and also mentioned his wonderful friendship with the great Prime Minister of India Modi.’
Gore has previously worked as a close aide of Trump. He had said, ‘I have traveled around the world with President Trump and I can confirm that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is genuine.’
India has rejected Lutnik’s statement
Earlier this month, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had claimed that the India-US trade agreement could not be reached because PM Modi had not called President Trump. However, India’s Foreign Ministry had refuted this and said that India is ready for a trade agreement that would benefit both the countries.
Lutnick had said in a podcast that India ‘missed the train’ by not contacting Trump within three weeks, while leaders of many other countries had done so. Responding to this, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said that India and America were negotiating a bilateral trade agreement since February 13 last year. Many times the agreement was close to being finalized.
It is noteworthy that India and America have held five rounds of official level talks since the talks started last February. Besides, discussions have also taken place at the ministerial level. Jaiswal had also told that Prime Minister Modi and President Trump had spoken on phone eight times in 2025. Many issues to bilateral partnership were discussed in it.
