The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel advice for certain regions of Spain following an alert issued earlier this week.

The first update came after two high-speed trains collided near Adamuz, in Córdoba province within Andalusia, southern Spain, on Sunday.

The high-speed rail accident claimed 39 lives on Sunday evening. An additional 75 individuals were taken to hospital following the collision and derailment of two trains near Adamuz in the country's Córdoba province.

Over 120 passengers sustained injuries when carriages on a Madrid-bound service derailed and crossed onto the opposing tracks, striking an approaching train in Adamuz.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has scrapped his scheduled visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, vowing to investigate Spain's most devastating rail catastrophe in over ten years.

Following the incident, FCDO guidance issued earlier this week states: "If you are a British national and you or a family member have been affected by this accident and require consular support, call the nearest British Embassy or Consulate on 0034 91 714 6300."

Separately, new guidance issued on Wednesday January 21, states: "Catalonia - local rail network suspension. Following incidents on the Catalan Rodalies (cercanías) rail network on 20 January, expect major disruption on all Rodalies services.

"Check routes before travelling."
