Chennai: The eagerly awaited second phase of Chennai Metro Rail has moved a significant step forward, with the Railway Board granting final approval for train operations on the Poonamallee–Vadapalani corridor. The line is now expected to open for passenger service in February 2026, pending the last crucial clearance—the safety certification of stations by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

 Poonamallee–Vadapalani Metro: Safety Inspections Underway

A team from the CMRS conducted a detailed inspection of the new trains three weeks ago, scrutinizing critical safety systems. The checks included the passenger emergency communication system, smoke detection and fire alarms, traction systems, and braking performance. The trains, manufactured at Sri City, were tested at speeds of up to 80 km/h, though their design allows for 90 km/h. The team also reviewed evacuation protocols and walkways for passenger safety in case of a mid-tunnel halt.

Chennai Metro Driverless Trains to be Manned Initially

Although the Phase-II trains are designed for fully automated, driverless operation, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials stated that they will be operated with drivers for the first six months as a precaution. After this period, on-board staff will accompany passengers for some time before transitioning to unattended operation.

Staggered Station Opening

The final CMRS inspection for stations is scheduled for the second week of February. Once cleared, the section from Poonamallee to Porur and up to Vadapalani will open first. Stations beyond Porur Junction up to Saligramam are expected to become operational a few months later, as per CMRL’s phased commissioning plan.

This development marks a crucial milestone for the 118.9 km Phase-II network, which aims to substantially enhance connectivity across Chennai and reduce traffic congestion on key routes.
