Owners of motorhomes and campervans are facing a new ban. The vehicles will be barred from popular car parks in Cornwall between 11pm and 8am under plans laid out by the local authority to "ensure parking assets are managed effectively whilst improving road safety, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable transport".
Beloved destinations affected include Summerleaze Beach and Crooklets Beach in Bude, Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, and Millpool in Looe. In addition, a number of spots in Newquay, such as Mount Wise, Harbour and Belmont, would be included in the new rule.
But there will be exemptions, officials have said, after a trial scheme in Bude, which the Cornwall Council said proved successful. Under the proposals, fully self-contained motorhomes would be allowed to stay overnight at 10 car parks across the county. However, these must have their own toilet and sealed containers for the disposal of wastewater and sewage, the council warned.
At the particular sites - including Padstow Link Road, Watergate Bay, Trenwith in St Ives, Wheal Leisure in Perranporth, Fowey main car park, Marazion Station, Gyllyngvase coach park in Falmouth, Seaton Bridge, Launceston Cattle Market, and Victoria Square in Bodmin - vehicles that meet the criteria would be able to be parked between 6pm and 9am.
Cornwall Council's cabinet member for transport, Councillor Dan Rogerson, told GB News that the plans are aimed at balancing the needs of motorhome users with concerns expressed by locals.
He said: "These are proposals at this stage and I very much encourage residents to take part in the consultation."
"I know some people rely on free car parks because they cannot park near their homes, and I particularly want to hear from those residents so we can understand the impact," Cllr Rogerson added.
Drivers allowed to park their mobile homes overnight would have to pay £10 and £20 per night during summer, and less dear prices in the winter.
Despite the leeway, no motorhomes at all would be able to be parked in Commercial Road car park in Hayle at any time.
