The champions' trophy offered a new outlook to the fans of star Indian batsman Virat Kohli. The best ODI batsman of the 21st century has remarkably matured at the age of 37. Kohli has made three centuries and three fifties in his last nine innings. He has always been comfortable scoring in 50-over cricket, but now the rate at which he runs have gone to another level.

Kohli's performance was 93, 23, and 124 against New Zealand. Even if we disregard his first batting, he is still a run ahead of India's second-best batsman in the series, KL Rahul, who has scored only 142 runs. It seems almost like Kohli has turned the clock back to 2016 and has come back to his prime again.

As a result, Indian cricket's all-time Test opener, Sunil Gavaskar, is inclined to think that not only Kohli should be participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup but also the ICC event of 2031 and even beyond.

Gavaskar commented:"New Zealand would have been nervous the entire time Virat was at the crease. He was the one guy who could take the game away from them, and for long periods it looked like he might. It was a brilliant innings."

Gavaskar has been arguing that the only player whom the audience can look up to in India's batting line-up lately is none other than Kohli himself. He has reached a stage where he does not wait for the mistake to come; rather he forces the bowlers into error right at the start itself. The Indian batter’s defense of spin bowling has improved dramatically since he came back from the London trip before heading for the Australia series.

Besides, Gavaskar showered praise on Kohli's superb fitness at the age of 37. The athlete still beats all others by a mile in terms of running between the wickets. That’s the main reason why Gavaskar thinks that Kohli should not only play but also relish each and every moment till cricket comes to an end for him. He even suggests the year 2032 or 2033 for Kohli's retirement.

He added: "Some of the shots were just crisp and clean. Beyond that, it’s how he maneuvers the field and how he runs between the wickets. There’s still an air of youth about him. Despite his age and experience, he’d probably still be the fittest guy in that side. That’s professionalism."
