Group voice and video calls coming to WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp is developing voice and video calls for group chats on its web client. The feature is still under development, but early signs show it aims to match what users already see on Android and iOS.

As reported by WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp Web will allow users to join and host group calls directly from a browser. This means no need to install a desktop app, which matters when you are using a shared or office computer.

Call links and scheduling are also part of the plan

The upcoming update does not stop at basic calling. WhatsApp is also working on:

• Call links that can be created directly inside group chats
• Options to choose voice or video when creating a link
• Scheduled calls with names, descriptions, and time windows

Scheduling a call will not auto start it. Instead, it creates an event so everyone knows when the call is planned. This feels useful for work groups and family catch ups alike.

Participant limits and what to expect

Group calls on WhatsApp Web are expected to support up to 32 participants, similar to mobile apps. That said, it is still unclear if WhatsApp will start with a smaller limit like 8 or 16 users and expand later.

The idea behind the cap is simple. WhatsApp wants calls to stay stable and avoid dropouts or audio issues, especially inside browsers.

A step closer to feature parity
