The Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco descended into chaos after the Senegalese national team pulled his players off the pitch after a controversial penalty. There were unsavoury scenes in Rabat as Senegal were denied a goal before minutes later, the hosts were awarded a spot-kick in the 108th-minute to snatch glory at the end.
Senegal manager Pape Thiaw was left incensed by the chaotic minutes in stoppage time and told his players to withdraw from the pitch, taking them to back to the dressing room. The delay lasted 13 minutes with discussions between former Liverpool star Sadio Mane in discussion with tournament officials as the showpiece match threatened to end abruptly. However, the players returned to the pitch but there was even more drama as this year's top goalscorer, Brahim Diaz, got his match-winning spot-kick all wrong as Edouard Mendy saved the panenka spot-kick.
It was goalless going into stoppage-time before Senegal thought they had drew first blood when they scrambled the ball home late on. However, the referee brought play back after it was deemed that substitute Abdoulaye Seck had fouled his opponent in the build up as he saw his header crash off the post.
In the eighth-minute of eight added, West Ham United defender El Hadju Malick Diouf was adjudged to have hauled down Diaz in the box. The incident sparked incredible scenes with the Senegalese players leaving the pitch and the Moroccan team looking bemused.
Footage taken from the stands suggests that the anger from the stands threatened to spill over into the pitch with Senegal fans reportedly looking to storm the pitch following the controversial decision. The players did return to the pitch with Mane playing peace-maker and bringing his teammates back onto the pitch.
But Diaz, of Real Madrid and formerly Manchester City, wrote his name in the history books for all the wrong reasons. He tried to catch the former Chelsea shot-stopper out with the audacious chip but he stood firm to catch the penalty. The cameras panned to Thiaw who could only smile and shake his head at the penalty, which was the last kick of the game as the referee blew his whistle for full-time - sending the final to extra-time.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel felt that the scenes made for a "shameful end" to the tournament. He said: "I just think the decision is totally, totally wrong. For me, what we've seen here, a fantastic tournament has been ruined.
"It's an awful, awful decision from the referee. The first goal should have stood, there was no foul on Hakimi, then two minutes later they give that penalty, it's a disgraceful decision. I understand their frustration because if you give this as a goal then give that as a penalty, for me is just ridiculous.
"I understand the frustrations but walking off the football pitch is something I don't want to see. It's a shameful end, it's a sad, sad end to this wonderful tournament. Whatever happens from here, I don't know who is the winner."
Just seven minutes into extra-time, the hosts contingent at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah was stunned into silence as Pape Gueye scored a spectacular opener for Senegal.
