Dogs may love their daily walks, but wintery weather can quickly bring those adventures to a halt. But just because the cold weather may stop fun outside, it doesn't mean that your dog has to sit around all day.

Carolyn Menteith, a behaviourist at the dog food subscription service Tails.com, has outlined how often you should walk your dog in the winter. She said dogs should be walked most days, saying: "For the vast majority of dogs, going on walks is the highlight of their day. Not only because it is a time to burn off energy and get the mental and social enrichment which all dogs need to stay healthy and happy, but it's also a chance to get a change of scenery, enjoy new sights, and to beat the boredom and frustration that can so easily occur when they might be spending all day indoors due to the winter weather. Without it, dogs can easily become hyperactive, stressed, bored or frustrated - and owners will see the behavioural fallout of that.

"What that looks like depends on the dog. They could look depressed, start being destructive in the house, begin barking at you or even nipping and biting - or they could do the 'wall of death' around your living room.

"It is therefore extremely important that if going outside just isn't an option on some days during winter, owners find other ways to have fun with their dogs while stuck indoors."

It is important to remember that in most cases, the weather in the UK puts us humans off going outside far more than it does our dogs.

She encouraged owners to get creative with enrichment. Boxes, cardboard inner tubes from kitchen rolls and toilet rolls, and any paper packing can be the perfect materials to create the ultimate enrichment experience on a rainy day.

Put a few treats or bits of food into any tubes or thin, tearable boxes and fold down the ends. Put some into any paper wrapping and screw it into a ball.

Then put them all into one big box (sized appropriately for your dog), and don't forget to scatter some bigger, longer-lasting treats or chews loose inside for easy prizes.

Even if you are not going out, dedicate that time to playing with your dog. These can be fetch, tug, hide and seek games. Make sure to include lots of treats and praise along the way.
