A R Rahman, the musician, has responded to the criticism he received for remarks he made regarding alleged prejudice in the Hindi cinema industry. Rahman reaffirmed his profound love for India in a video statement posted on social media, adding that he never meant to offend anyone with his previous comments.

Rahman emphasized that music has always been a means for him to honor and celebrate culture while describing India as his home, inspiration, and teacher in the video. He stated that his goal has always been to encourage and serve through his art, acknowledging that intentions can occasionally be misinterpreted. Rahman also conveyed his appreciation for the diversity and creative freedom that he claims India provides to artists.

The controversy started when Rahman stated in an interview with the BBC Asian Network that Bollywood job offers have slowed and that “power shifts”—possibly to communal dynamics—might be a role. However, he added that this was based on indirect impressions rather than firsthand experience.

Peers in the sector have responded in different ways. Singer Shaan publicly challenged the notion of communal prejudice in the music industry, arguing that opportunity is still mostly determined by merit and creative quality.

Rahman’s video ends with thoughts on his lengthy career, highlighting high-profile projects, mentorship work, and collaborations as proof of his dedication to music that “honours the past, celebrates the present, and inspires the future.”
