A charming city just a few hours away from the UK has been named as one of the best places to visit this year. European capitals remain among the most deserving destinations to visit, with travellers around the world dreaming of exciting and authentic cultural holiday experiences across the continent.

Fortunately for Brits, we do not have to travel very far to experience to places, including Brussels, which, according to Conde Nast Traveller, is a must-visit this year.

Noting Belgium's capital as "often-overlooked" the magazine says that holidaymakers should visit Brussels for two reasons: "creative inspiration and cultural revival".

In 2024, Brussels welcomed nearly 10 million visitors, which was a significant increase from the prior year, and it appears that tourism is set to continue to increase.

The city is about to experience a cultural renaissance, with the likes of its new Kanal-Centre Pompidou opening in November 2026. The landmark will feature an extensive program of live performances, music, film, and workshops, as well as a library and a restaurant with a rooftop bar.

However, without having to wait until November, the city already has a number of exciting things to experience.

The Grand-Place has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998 and, according to Visit Brussels, is considered the world's most beautiful square.

It hosts many events throughout the year, including concerts, fairs, folklore events, the tree and nativity scene, sound and light shows, and the flower carpet in the summer.

And beyond the festivities, the square itself is a beautiful area to admire. It is surrounded by the Braquoe guild houses, the lavish City Hall and the Maison du Roi, the city's museum.

Brits can travel to Brussels in under two hours via the Eurostar from London St Pancras or take a direct flight from various UK airports, including London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham.
