
Lucknow, 16 January. Students studying Sanskrit will now also be able to become doctors. Central Sanskrit University has taken this important decision in view of the increasing global acceptance of Upveda Ayurveda of Atharvaveda and the increasing demand for Indian Ayurvedic products. Under this, a special course of seven and a half years after 12th class is being prepared for the students of Sanskrit background, through which they will be able to become formal Ayurveda doctors.
Online application to join Ayurveda Gurukulam
Vice Chancellor of Central Sanskrit University, Prof. Srinivas Varkhedi and Dr. Manisha U, Chairperson of the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM). Kothekar launches Ayurveda Gurukul Affiliation Portal. Those Sanskrit institutions across the country, who have the prescribed eligibility, will be able to apply online through the portal to join Ayurveda Gurukulam. The process of registration, inspection and affiliation has been made transparent, streamlined and fully digital, providing a strong national regulatory framework for Gurukul based Ayurveda education.
It is noteworthy that in accordance with the New Education Policy 2020, this initiative is being considered an example of balance of tradition and innovation. Ayurveda, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Yoga and Samhita complement each other and their coordinated study will be possible through the Gurukul system. This program will provide holistic education to the students by connecting Indian knowledge tradition with modern technology and skill development.
What is the relation between Ayurveda and Sanskrit?
Vice Chancellor Prof. Srinivas Varkhedi said that Ayurveda has an inseparable connection with Sanskrit. Without Sanskrit, it is not possible to understand Ayurveda philosophy, physiology and medical principles in depth. This course will enable students at both practical and theoretical levels through the integration of philosophy, medical science and Indianism.

Pro. Varkhedi said that global interest towards Ayurveda is continuously increasing. This Gurukul based model will effectively present India’s ancient knowledge tradition at the international level. Ayurveda is not just a medical system, but a lifestyle, which has its roots in Sanskrit scriptures.
Special course prescribed for 7.5 years
He said that under the Pre-Ayurveda programme, a course of integrated duration of seven years and six months has been prescribed. This will include a two-year pre-Ayurveda programme, a four-year and six-month BAMS course and a one-year compulsory internship.
